Why should I?

dianaramirez08

Why should you crochet? Why are so many people picking up this hobby? Is it even worth your time? Well, to start off, who in the world doesn’t love a soft cozy blanket or a nice toasty warm beanie? If that isn’t enough to convince you to join us in the world of crochet, then I have gathered a few other reasons why you should pick up a new hobby, and why that new hobby should be crochet.

1)      It is seen as a form of love language.

First off, if your love language is gift giving, then crochet is the perfect hobby for you to pick up. There are a ton of cool crochet ideas you can do for the people that you love and care about in your life. You can make a warm and cozy blanket for a family member. You can make a cute and cuddly stuffed animal for your younger sibling. You can make a gorgeous and colorful flower bouquet for your mom. A matching set of a beanie and scarf for your father. Or hey, maybe you want to gift yourself a little something like a pair of gloves or a pillow. The possibilities are endless, the only limit is your imagination, (and maybe how much yarn you have left!). Making a crochet gift is a sign of dedication and hard work. It shows effort and that you cared enough to complete the gift. Anyone you give a handmade crochet item will be grateful and excited about it. Crochet is a great way to surprise someone.

2)      Stress? What Is that?

Crochet is art, art is crochet. Art has proven again and again that it helps you with stress, and because crochet is art, it ALSO allows you to de-stress. Being able to crochet as a hobby allows you to coordinate your hands to the stressful emotions you are dealing with. It helps you put your frustration and stress into that hook and yarn, and you end up creating something beautiful to put back into the world. If you start to crochet, you decrease the chances of you getting stressed by school or your work.

3)      Your mental health will thank you later.

Look, I know that I mentioned that it relieves stress, but let’s go ahead and dip into this a little deeper. Crochet can help you with anxiety and depression. Studies show that by doing art therapy, your happiness rates go high. Not only is serotonin released when you do crafts, but you also feel great satisfaction when completing a project. Crochet allows you to better your mental health and to increase the possibility of a happier lifestyle and positive emotions in your daily life. Your mental health is just the start, because once you better it, you will better your emotional state, and by doing that then you will improve your physical health and overall wellbeing.

4)      You will be able to break away from the bad habits.

Many studies show that people who pick up crochet as a hobby are able to break away from bad habits. Some of the bad habits that people have been able to break away from are smoking, binge eating, biting their nails, and drinking. Research shows that by putting effort into something else when you get the urge to do a bad habit, you will decrease the probability of you continuing the bad habits you may have. A lot of people who want to quit smoking or the other things I mentioned, often try artistic outlets.

5)      Crochet is a great way to make some extra cash.

Who doesn’t like a little bit of side money? Crochet can become a door to a small business. I am living proof of that. As most of you know, I am the owner and founder of a small business called Sookie’s Creations. I started off selling handmade jewelry, but once I picked up crochet as a hobby, I was able to double, almost triple my sales. I go to pop-up markets over the weekend and showcase my art. Learning how to crochet allowed me to share more of my creations to customers, and allowed me to connect with other creators. I have had my small business for about 4 years now, but I started to incorporate crochet items just last year. I wouldn’t be where I am now with my business if it weren’t for crochet.

I hope that this short list provides you at least an insight of all the awesome opportunities that can open up to you if you try picking up crochet as a hobby.
